POETRY has been found to have a positive impact on mental health, providing comfort and support during periods of stress, trauma, and grief. In this article, we will explore the connection between poetry and mental health and how poetry can be used as a therapeutic tool for mental health, benefiting those who engage with it.

Poetry is a form of art that speaks to the soul and can be therapeutic. It can provide comfort and boost mood during difficult times, while also helping poets better express themselves and make sense of the world around them. It can also serve as a link between feelings of joy, happiness, or love between the sharer and the listener.

Poetry and mental health are closely intertwined because poems offer a safe space to process emotions and vocalise hardships and even joy. Research studies have shown that writing or reading poetry can be therapeutic. For example, a 2016 study found that performance poetry can be a boost for mental well-being and reduce signs of depression, anxiety, and stress. Another study showed how our brains are highly attuned to rhyme and rhythm in poetry, with infants responding most significantly to nursery rhymes.

The Therapeutic benefits of Poetry

If we open our hearts to its message, poetry can do wonders for our mental health. It teaches us how deep our connections to one another can be and how we can have compassion for one another’s stories. In times of trauma, poetry can activate a different part of the brain, helping us find our voice again.

There are also many other ways in which words can be used to promote mental wellness. including but not limited to:

  1. Emotional expression: Poetry provides a safe and creative outlet for expressing complex emotions that may be difficult to put into words. This can help individuals process and make sense of their feelings, reducing feelings of anxiety or depression.
  1. Self-reflection: Writing poetry can also be a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. By exploring their own experiences and emotions through writing, poets can gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships with others.
  1. Empathy: Poetry can also promote empathy by allowing readers or listeners to step into the shoes of the poet and experience the world from their perspective. This can help individuals develop greater compassion and understanding for others.
  1. Mindfulness: Writing, listening to, and reading poetry requires a certain level of focus and concentration, which can promote mindfulness and help individuals to be more present in the moment.
  1. Connection: Poetry can also be a tool for building connections with others. Sharing poetry with others or attending poetry events can help individuals to feel less alone and more connected to their community.

While poetry can be a valuable tool for expressing and processing emotions, it is important to note that it should not replace professional therapy or medication for those with mental health conditions. Poetry can only complement and enhance these treatments; it cannot replace them.

Here are five of my favorite poems that do more than soothe, encourage, and inspire me. Perhaps one (or all) of them will speak to you.

Each of these poems offers a unique message of hope and understanding, reminding me (us) that we are not alone in our struggles. They also serve as a reminder that while poetry is not a cure for mental health issues, it can be a valuable tool for self-expression, reflection, and healing.
