***Honouring the unspoken heroes of our lives

Happy Father’s Day

Because today is Father’s Day, I will review the poem “Daddy Said” from IB’s Grammy-nominated album “Music Has Failed Us

THE poem Daddy Said vividly and movingly depicts a complex relationship between a father and his son. It delves deeply into the son’s emotional journey, highlighting the challenges and struggles he encountered growing up in a home where his father’s sternness and emotional distance was dominant.

The narration by the poet, IB, effectively captures the influence a father’s behaviour can have on a child’s upbringing and perception of paternal love.

IB skillfully weaves imagery and metaphors together to depict the father’s rigid nature, portraying him as a formidable figure whose presence instills both fear and admiration. The son’s yearning for a deeper connection is conveyed through the use of language, such as comparing his father’s fists to pestles and describing his silence as deafening.

Men often learn from a very young age to maintain a stoic demeanour; they are taught by “their fathers” and society that showing vulnerability or emotional openness is not “manly.” This expectation reinforces the stereotype that men should be strong and silent, and maintain emotional rigidity. They are also frequently raised to believe that physical strength and power are essential masculine characteristics. Because vulnerability and sensitivity are frequently perceived as flaws or “womanly traits,” this emphasis on physicality can suppress emotions.

The poem captures a father’s rigid nature and its impact on his son’s upbringing. The depiction of the father as a fearsome figure, inspiring both fear and admiration, reflects the societal expectation that men should embody strength and authority. This expectation frequently discourages the open expression of emotions, resulting in a culture of emotional rigidity. As a result, men may find it difficult to express their emotions fully, fearing judgment or being perceived as weak.

Aside reflecting on societal expectations of men, Daddy Said also addresses patriarchy and polygamy. It raises interesting questions about the emotional cost of conforming to rigid gender roles as well as the impact of such dynamics on family relationships. We see the son’s longing for love and acceptance, as well as his struggle to understand and connect with a father who remains elusive and enigmatic.

Overall, Daddy Said is a moving examination of the complexities of fatherhood and the long-term effects it can have on children’s lives. It serves as a reminder that not all father-child relationships are ideal and that some fathers, like the one depicted, may find it difficult to express love and affection. It prompts us to reflect on the importance of emotional connection and understanding within familial bonds.

FATHER‘s Day is conceived to acknowledge and celebrate the enormous value that fathers bring to lives of their children or wards. It celebraties one’s father or a significant father figure, as well as fatherhood, fatherly bonds, and the significance of fathers in society. While the poem Daddy Said depicts a difficult father-son relationship, it is important to remember that it is only one viewpoint among many. Fatherhood is a broad spectrum, and there are many fathers who deserve to be recognised for their love, support, and positive influence.

Fathers should be honoured not only because they are our fathers but also because their contributions have such an impact on our lives. They can often be the ones who offer advice, protection, and encouragement. They can also be a source of stability while also impacting wisdom and serving as role models for their children through their presence, instilling values in them, teaching them important life skills, and inspiring them to overcome obstacles.

Father’s Day allows us to recognise our fathers’ sacrifices and selflessness. These men are examples of strength and resilience, as well as perseverance and determination. They are frequently unsung heroes, cheering us on from the sidelines and ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed. They work tirelessly to meet the needs of their families and nurture their dreams.

As a result, it is critical that we honour our fathers for their efforts as well as their achievements. Recognising their presence and positive influence in our lives allows us to appreciate the bond between fathers and their children. We express our gratitude and strengthen the bonds between generations through celebration.

On this day and every day, we should remember that our fathers are also human beings with their own stories and complexities. Recognising and honouring their contributions while also acknowledging their flaws and all play a significant role in shaping our lives.

Please take this opportunity to honour your father today if you haven’t already.

Father’s Day is a day to express our love, appreciation, and respect for the fathers who have had a lasting impact on our lives.
