AC MILAN and Monza have expressed their sadness at the passing of former Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
The flamboyant politician and businessman died today at the age of 86
at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan.
Berlusconi was heavily involved in the running of both AC Milan and Monza having owned the Serie A clubs at different times.
He was Milan owner for 31 years between 1986 and 2017, initially saving the club from bankruptcy.
The controversial businessman oversaw the most successful period in AC Milan’s history, as they won eight Serie A titles and the UEFA Champions League five times during that time.
“Deeply saddened, AC Milan grieves the passing of the unforgettable Silvio Berlusconi and wishes to reach out to the family, associates, and most cherished friends to share our sympathies,” the Italian giants wrote on Twitter today.
The club followed up their message with a Berlusconi quote: “Tomorrow, we will dream of new ambitions, create new challenges, and seek new victories. Which will represent the good, the strong, and the true that lies inside us, in all of us who shared this adventure of binding our lives to a dream called Milan.”
“Thank you, Mr. President. Always with us,” they added.
Berlusconi took over at Monza in 2018 when they were in the Italian third tier and within five years helped them to Serie A, and supervised an impressive 11th place finish in their first season, which just ended.
Moments after the news broke of Berlusconi’s death, Monza’s social media channels changed their profile pictures to an all-black version of the club’s crest.
The club also released a brief statement, which read: “Adriano Galliani and all AC Monza mourn the loss of Silvio Berlusconi: “A void that can never be filled, forever with us. Thank you for everything President.”
