NIGERIAN Breweries, with three of its brands Goldberg, Life Continental and ZAGG Energy Drink, says it is solidly behind the Super Eagles as they seek a spot at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire early next year.
The brands played a huge role in motivating the Super Eagles to a crucial 1-0 away win against Guinea-Bissau in their last qualifying clash, and are pledging more support as the three-time champions prepare to face Sierra Leone.
With Goldberg, Life Continental and ZAGG Energy Drink giving them a push, the Super Eagles could qualify for the next AFCON with victory against the Leone Stars in Monrovia, Liberia on Sunday.
The Portfolio Manager – Mainstream Brands, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Ita Bassey, while commending the Super Eagles for a job well done so far, urged them to finish off the assignment in Monrovia with a game to spare.
“We are confident that the Super Eagles will do the nation proud in Monrovia. We have been impressed with the team’s performance so far in the qualifiers and we believe that they have what it takes to qualify for the AFCON even before many other countries also aspire to be in Cote d’Ivoire,” he said.
“The Super Eagles are aware the Leone Stars are a stubborn team as they needed to come from behind before securing a 2-1 win when both teams faced off in Abuja last year.”
The Super Eagles fell to second place in qualifying Group A with nine points after Guinea-Bissau’s 1-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe yesterday, but Jose Peseiro’s side have a game in hand.
If Nigeria beat Sierra Leone on Sunday, they will qualify and return to the top of the group standings, two points clear of Guinea-Bissau.
Indeed, a draw is enough to see the Super Eagles through to their third straight AFCON participation as they will maintain a four-point lead over Sierra Leone with just one round of matches left.
Two teams will qualify from the group.
The Super Eagles have been undergoing intense training sessions since Monday for the encounter, with all the big guns like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Taiwo Awoniyi and Wilfred Ndidi available for the trip to Liberia.
