NIGERIA’S D’Tigress continued their quest for a record fourth straight Women’s AfroBasket Championship title with an 83-65 victory over Egypt in Kigali, Rwanda today.
The win is the champions’ second in Group D following Friday’s 69-35 rout of Democratic Republic of Congo, and it had taken them to the quarter-finals.
Amy Okonkwo was the star of the show today with her game-high 29 points and 13 rebounds as D’Tigress dominated three of the four quarters.
After a slow start, Nigeria got into their stride and led 18-10 at the end of the first quarter.
D’Tigress ramped it up in the second quarter and were in a commanding 42-23 lead at half-time.
Egypt put up some fight to outscore Nigeria 19-14 in the third quarter, but D’Tigress closed out the game 27-23 in the final period to seal an 18-point victory.
It was Egypt’s first defeat of the tournament after they had beaten DR Congo 89-78 in their opening game yesterday.
Nigeria won the group with four points, followed by Egypt with three and DR Congo with two.
