TAIWO Awoniyi scored the opening goal tonight and made history as he helped Nottingham Forest to a 2-1 Premier League victory over Sheffield United at the City Ground.

The Super Eagles striker struck in the third minute of the encounter, making it six games in a row that he has scored for Nottingham Forest.

The run of scoring goals in six consecutive Premier League appearances is now the longest of any Nigerian player, and is surpassed by only two African players in the competition’s history — Mohamed Salah and Emmanuel Adebayor (seven-game runs), according to Opta statistics.

Awoniyi has also scored eight goals in those six games: two each against Southampton and Chelsea, as well as one each against Arsenal and Crystal Palace at the business end of last season.

He has now begun this new season with a strike against Arsenal and a fine headed goal tonight against promoted Sheffield United as Forest earned their first points of the campaign.

Gustavo Hamer equalised for Sheffield United three minutes into the second half and the visitors threatened to snatch all three points.

But Chris Woods netted a late winner for Forest in the 89th minute, five minutes after replacing Awoniyi.
