MANCHESTER United and Burnley secured comfortable victories in Carabao Cup third round matches tonight but fellow Premier League side Wolves were bundled out by second-tier Ipswich Town.
Holders Manchester United, who have endured a tough start to the season, earned their second consecutive victory in all competitions by beating Crystal Palace 3-0 at Old Trafford to follow up Saturday night’s 1-0 Premier League win at Burnley.
With both sides fielding much changed teams, United were dominant and scored through Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial to ease through to the fourth round.
At the Peninsula Stadium, Burnley thrashed fourth-tier club Salford City 4-0, with Sander Berge, Jacob Bruun Larsen, Dara O’Shea and Wilson Odobert netting.
The result provided some relief for Burnley manager Vincent Kompany, whose side are yet to win in the Premier League since their promotion.
The second Premier League club to be dumped out tonight were Wolves, who blew a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Ipswich Town.
Hwang Hee-chan and Toti Gomes gave Wolves the two-goal lead within the first 15 minutes of the encounter and they looked to be cruising to the fourth round.
But Ipswich, who are second in the Championship table, rallied and goals from Omari Hutchinson and Freddie Ladapo, the English forward with Nigerian blood, pulled them level before the half-time break.
Jack Taylor struck early in the second half to earn Ipswich Town the victory and pile more misery on Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, whose side have not won in three matches.
In other Carabao Cup third round clashes tonight, third-tier Exeter defeated Premier League Luton Town 1-0, Middlesbrough beat Bradford City 2-0 and Mansfield overcame Peterborough 3-1 on penalties.
