RIVERS United have qualified for the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup after overcoming Burkina Faso’s Etoile Filante 2-0 on aggregate.

The only Nigerian representatives left in continental competitions scored two late goals today in Port Harcourt to secure the victory after a tough first half.

With the tie heading to penalties, Alex Oyowah struck twice, first in the 89th minute and again in stoppage time.

The first leg two weeks ago had ended 0-0 and Rivers United, who finished third in the Nigeria Premier Football League last season, needed a win by any margin at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium to scale through.

They carry Nigeria’s hopes in continental competitions this season after the other three clubs from the country failed to reach the group phase.

Enyimba and Remo Stars, NPFL champions and runners-up respectively, were eliminated early in the CAF Champions League, while Federation Cup holders Bendel Insurance’s journey in the Confederation Cup ended on Friday in the second qualifying round.

Al Ahly Benghazi of Libya saw off two-time African champions Enyimba in the first qualifying round of the CAF Champions League, with Remo Stars succumbing to Ghana’s Medeama at the same stage.

Insurance were eliminated on Friday following a 1-0 defeat in Morocco to RS Berkane as the first leg in Benin City had ended 2-2.
