CATHY Ferguson, the wife of the legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has died at the age of 84.
The death of Lady Cathy, who was married to Sir Alex for 57 years, was announced by the Ferguson family today.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family asks for privacy at this time,” the statement from the family reads.
Lady Cathy was Sir Alex’s confidant for decades and she stood by him during the rocky early days of his eventually successful 27 years in charge at Manchester United.
When Sir Alex retired in 2013, he said his decision was made because he needed to spend more time with Lady Cathy after the death of her sister Bridget.
Ferguson, who joined United in 1986, also revealed that he would have retired in 2002 but for Cathy who encouraged him to carry on. He went on to win a second UEFA Champions League title and six more Premier League titles before finally retiring in 2013.
One of their sons, Darren Ferguson, is a former footballer and also a manager, currently in charge of English third-tier club Peterborough United.
“Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy,” the club said in a condolence message.
“Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.”
