MANCHESTER United produced a late rally to secure a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford today, with Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka featuring for the visitors.
Also in the Premier League today, Nigeria international Alex Iwobi started for Fulham as they defeated Sheffield United 3-1, while there were victories for Chelsea and Everton too.
Brentford struck first through Mathias Jensen in the 26th minute, profiting off errors from Casemiro, Victor Lindelof and Andre Onana.
The visitors defended superbly after taking that lead and Onyeka was brought on in the 70th minute as they kept Erik ten Hag’s struggling side at bay.
United appeared to be heading to their third straight defeat at home in all competitions as they huffed and puffed but things took a turn late on.
Scott McTominay was introduced in place of Sofyan Amrabat with three minutes of regulation time left, but the time was enough for the Scotland midfielder to secure his side the three points.
He first struck in the third minute of stoppage time with a low shot from inside the Brentford box and then headed home the winner four minutes later from Harry Maguire’s assist as Old Trafford went wild.
At Craven Cottage, Iwobi made his first Premier League start for Fulham and played for 79 minutes as they defeated Sheffield United 3-1.
Bobby Decordova-Reid and Willian’s strikes were complemented by Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham’s own goal to give Marco Silva’s side their first victory in three games.
At Turf Moor, Chelsea’s turnaround in fortunes continued with a 4-1 victory over Burnley, who have won only once in the league since their promotion this season.
Burnley scored first through Wilson Odobert in the 15th minute but Ameen Al-Dakhil’s own goal brought Chelsea level three minutes before half-time.
Carlton Palmer struck from the penalty spot early in the second half to shoot Chelsea in front and further goals from Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson sealed the three points for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Everton also won today, beating Bournemouth 3-0 at Goodison Park, with James Garner, Jack Harrison and Abdoulaye Doucoure netting.
In the early kick-off, Tottenham Hotspur strode to the top of the table with a 1-0 win at Luton Town through Micky Van de Ven’s strike despite playing the entire second half with 10 man following Yves Bissouma’s sending off.
