CALVIN Bassey did not endear himself to Fulham fans tonight as they lost 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur in their English Premier League clash.

The Super Eagles defender was involved in both goals conceded by his side, giving away the ball on both occasions as the table toppers pounced.

Heung-min Son and James Maddison scored in either half to take Ange Postecoglou’s side past champions Manchester City to the top of the standings.

The dominant hosts took the lead in the 36th minute as they worked the ball to Son in the box after Bassey passed it straight to a Spurs player in a dangerous area.

The Korea forward produced a composed finish, firing past goalkeeper Bernd Leno after taking a touch to evade his marker.

Bassey, who was playing on the right side of the Fulham central defence despite being heavily left-footed, continued to look nervous when playing out from the back and the Spurs players sensed his discomfort.

The Nigeria international was a major culprit in the second goal too, losing the ball again and Tottenham taking advantage to seal the win through the impressive Maddison nine minutes into the second half.

Bassey’s international teammate Alex Iwobi was introduced at the start of the second half as Fulham chased the game, but his presence made no difference as the hosts saw out a comfortable win.

Postecoglou has now earned 23 points in his first nine Premier League games in charge of Tottenham (seven wins and two draws), the most of any manager in their first nine games in the competition’s history, according to Opta statistics.

Spurs are two points clear of second-placed Manchester City and third-placed Arsenal, while Fulham are in 13th spot, 12 points behind.
