THE Sokoto State Election Petition Tribunal has confirmed the people democratic party (PDP)’s Aminu Tambuwal as the legitimately elected Senator for Sokoto South Senatorial District in the 2023 elections.

The All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Abdullahi Danbaba filed a petition disputing Tambuwal’s victory, requesting that the Tribunal declare the election inconclusive for failing to comply substantially with the terms of the Electoral Act.

Danbaba further requested that the Tribunal order re-elections in 28 voting units where he claimed elections were not held during the February and April substantive and supplementary polls.

In a unanimous decision, the Tribunal dismissed the petition for lack of merit and for providing unreliable documents and evidence.

The Tribunal also awarded the cost of N200,000 each to the first and second respondents, the PDP and Tambuwal.

Recall that Tambuwal, a two-term ex-governor of Sokoto State, won the election with 100,860 votes.

He defeated his nearest challenger Danbaba, who received 95,884 votes, by a margin of 4,976 votes.
