THE Super Falcons are on the verge of sealing their place in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after thrashing Cape Verde 5-0 in Abuja today.
The nine-time African champions produced a ruthless display in the first leg of the final qualifying round tie, scoring thrice in the first half and twice more after the break.
Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronkwo netted a brace each while Gift Monay scored the other goal.
Mexico-based Kanu opened the floodgates of goals in the seventh minute and Spain-based Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage 18 minutes later.
Kanu completed her brace before half-time as the Super Falcons asserted their superiority over the minnows from Cape Verde.
Okoronkwo came off the bench in the second half to finish off Cape Verde, netting in the 66th and 77th minutes.
The Super Falcons have never failed to qualify for WAFCON and will confirm their spot in the 2024 tournament after the second leg on Tuesday.
The 2024 WAFCON will be hosted by Morocco, who also organised the last edition in 2022 and reached the final after beating the Super Falcons in the semi-finals.
