EVERTON have submitted a formal appeal against an independent commission’s decision to hand them an unprecedented 10-point Premier League deduction.

The club announced the decision to appeal two weeks after the ruling which dragged them from relative safety to the relegation zone.

“Everton Football Club has today lodged with the Chair of the Premier League’s Judicial Panel its appeal of the decision by a Premier League Commission to impose a 10-point deduction on the Club,” the club posted on their X, formerly known as Twitter, account today.

“An Appeal Board will now be appointed to hear the case.”

The punishment was handed to Everton for financial breaches, which included breaking financial fair play rules established to protect football clubs from spending money they are not earning.

The Premier League explained that the points deduction was for a breach of profit and sustainability rules but Everton responded immediately, saying they were ‘shocked and disappointed’ and promising to appeal.

The 10-point deduction is the largest in the history of the Premier League and took Everton from being eight points clear of the bottom three to being bottom of the table.
