THE Supreme Court is set to hear an appeal filed by Kabiru Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) following the Court of Appeal’s confirmation of the Election Petition Tribunal’s decision to reverse his election victory on Thursday.

The Commissioner of Information, Baba Dantiye, confirmed this event stating that the upcoming hearing has huge significance for the Kano State governorship seat.

Both the Appeal Court and the Tribunal agreed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, had won the election.

As a result, both courts ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw Yusuf’s Certificate of Return and reissue it to Gawuna, recognizing him as the state’s legitimately elected governor.

However, Yusuf, who was sworn in as governor in May, petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the lower courts’ findings.

Dantiye stated in respect to the next Supreme Court session, “The forthcoming Supreme Court hearing is critical in determining the election outcome.” We are awaiting the court’s ruling and hope for a just outcome.”

The next Supreme Court session has heightened anticipation across the state, as stakeholders await the final ruling, which will finally determine who is the genuine occupant of the Kano State governorship seat.
