Ahead of the Armed Forces Rememberance Day, retired soldiers who fought alongside the Federal Government in the Civil War have threatened to stage a protest on January 15, 2024, due to their outstanding pensions that have remained unpaid for 40 years following the conflict.
In a statement released by their national coordinator, Babawande Philip, and National Secretary, Okewuyi Bayo, the veterans criticised the Federal Government for neglecting them despite their significant contributions to preserving narion’s unity.
Expressing their dissatisfaction with successive governments’ treatment, the veterans highlighted their efforts to draw attention to their plight through letters and appeals. However, they lamented being ignored, even after addressing the President, the National Assembly, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Military Pension Board, and the Ministry of Defence in October, receiving no response.
The veterans condemned the government’s disparity in providing pensions, citing the contrast between their situation —struggling for four decades without pensions — and their counterparts who fought against the government receiving regular payments. They emphasized the loss of many comrades during this prolonged struggle.
As a result, the war veterans have resolved to initiate nationwide protests, beginning on January 15, to demand fair treatment. They emphasized their determination to continue protesting until their rightful dues are acknowledged and fulfilled, giving the government until January 14 to address their concerns before their planned demonstrations begin.
