FORMER Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has expressed his admiration for Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey’s performances as they both starred in Fulham’s 2-1 English Premier League victory over Arsenal yesterday.
The two Super Eagles stars were outstanding against the title-chasing Gunners as Fulham snapped a three-match losing streak, and Oliseh is hoping they take the good form to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Both midfielder Iwobi and centre-back Bassey are in Nigeria’s squad to the 2023 AFCON, which will be held in Cote d’Ivoire from January 13 to February 11.
Former Nigeria head coach Oliseh, who handed Iwobi his Super Eagles debut in 2015, was like a proud dad last night as he praised his compatriots.
“Extremely impressed by the maturity and discipline put up versus Arsenal by Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi as they played decisive roles in Fulham’s victory – over a seemingly mentally tired Arsenal,” Oliseh posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Former Ajax, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Oliseh was one of the key players of the Super Eagles squad that won Nigeria’s second AFCON title in Tunisia 20 years ago, and he is hoping Iwobi and Bassey will inspire the team to another triumphant outing.
“Encouraging for the AFCON. Una do well!!!” he added, apparently looking forward to the continental showpiece.
The Super Eagles are in Group A for the 2023 AFCON, along with the hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.
