HOSTS Cote d’Ivoire began the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023) on the perfect note with a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau tonight in Abijdan.
After a spectacular opening ceremony that showcased African art, music and culture, the fans at the Alassane Outtara Stadium, who included Ivorian President Alassane Outtara and football legends, were treated to a dominant performance by the hosts.
Seko Fofana got the Elephants off to a great start in the Group A clash when he powered home a brilliant finish in the fourth minute.
The Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia midfielder won the ball back close to the Guinea-Bissau box and shrugged off two defenders before powering home from just inside the box.
Fofana almost doubled Cote d’Ivoire’s lead before half-time but another powerful shot was superbly tipped onto the crossbar by Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Ouparine Djoco.
Jean-Philippe Krasso extended the Elephants’ advantage 13 minutes into the second half with another fine finish.
The Red Star Belgrade striker hooked the ball over a Guinea-Bissau defender in the box, took a second touch to steady it and then drove home from close range, all in one fluid, acrobatic movement.
Guinea-Bissau, who have now lost their eighth straight AFCON match, had some decent chances but were outclassed by the hosts.
With the win, Cote d’Ivoire took early control of Group A and lead with three points, with the Super Eagles of Nigeria facing Equatorial Guinea tomorrow.
