SUPER Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has commended the performance of Victor Osimhen in last night’s AFCON 2023 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 victory over Cameroon.

African Player of the Year Osimhen was a constant threat throughout the match and nicked the ball off a defender to set up Ademola Lookman for the opening goal of the 2-0 victory at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abijdan, Cote d’Ivoire.

“Osimhen didn’t score, but he had a fantastic game,” Peseiro said.

“It is not easy to stop him. Ask them [opposition defenders] how they suffer. He made a fine assist today.”

Osimhen himself, who has scored one goal in four matches but has been a nightmare for opposition defenders, admitted that the Super Eagles still have much more to offer in the championship.

“I cannot lie, we haven’t played the best of our football yet,” the Napoli striker said during his post-match interview.

“All of us in the squad, from the starting line-up to those on the bench, have this mentality of winning. We’re not just players, we are family and we want to win.

“We always have respect for our opponents. It’s important to be focused and have the mentality that we can win against any team.”

Osimhen, 25, also praised the Super Eagles defence as the side have conceded only one goal in four games and kept three straight clean sheets.

The Super Eagles will face Angola in the quarter-finals at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Friday.
