THE Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has clarified the reason behind the long lines at certain gas stations in Lagos State.
The NNPCL attributed the congestion to a temporary distribution issue.
Earlier reports indicated lengthy queues at various filling stations in Lagos yesterday, prompting concerns of a potential shortage of Premium Motor Spirit.
Notably, stations along the Ikorodu Road and the Total Filling Station at Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way experienced heavy queues, causing traffic congestion in the Ikeja area.
Additionally, several filling stations along the Ikeja axis and Ogunnusi Road did not sell petrol, while NNPCL-owned stations along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway also faced fuel dispensing challenges.
However, NNPCL’s spokesperson, Femi Soneye, dismissed the notion of a new fuel scarcity, affirming that the company did not encounter supply issues and its products remained accessible.
Soneye explained that the distribution problem in certain areas had been resolved.
Similarly, the National Vice Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Hammed Fashola, suggested that the queues might be due to customer panic-buying.
He expressed uncertainty about a fuel scarcity and indicated plans to investigate the situation.
The Executive Secretary of the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria, Clement Isong, stated also that he was not aware of the situation as he was not in Lagos at the time of the report.
