SHELL Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited has announced the successful delivery of more than 475,000 barrels of crude oil to the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC) through its Bonny Oil & Gas Terminal (BOGT). This accomplishment aligns with the government’s commitment to enhancing domestic refining capacity and ensuring the availability of products within the country.
According to a statement by Abimbola Essien-Nelson, the Media Relations Manager, the resumption of supply from BOGT occurred after an extended outage of over five years, during which the refinery underwent rehabilitation and integrity activities on its supply pipeline from BOGT.
The Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria and Managing Director of The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC), Dr. Osagie Okunbor, emphasized the collaborative efforts between BOGT and PHRC, highlighting the significance of this development in supporting the nation’s efforts to utilize key infrastructure for a consistent supply of products to the Nigerian market.
Okunbor also mentioned that future supplies from BOGT would be contingent on product demand, while Osita Nnajiofor, the Bonny Terminal Installation Manager, emphasized the rigorous integrity and maintenance activities carried out to ensure the safe completion of the refinery supply without any adverse impact on people, the environment, or equipment.
The recommencement of crude oil supply from the Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal to the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited is seen as a significant achievement with potential positive effects on the industry, the country, and the economy, supporting the government’s goal of ensuring a steady supply of petroleum products to the downstream market and other associated economic benefits.
This development is particularly crucial as the government aims to revitalize long-dormant refineries to reduce the country’s dependence on fuel imports, with Port Harcourt being one of the four government-owned refineries undergoing revitalization efforts.
