DUTCH football player Quincy Promes has been sentenced to six years in prison for drug trafficking.

ESPN Netherlands reported today that the former Ajax star was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in large-scale cocaine smuggling.

In the ruling, the court considers it proven that Promes ‘had a guiding and facilitating role’ in a drug trafficking ring, and the Public Prosecution Service had demanded nine years imprisonment.

The conviction stems from the interception of a shipment of no less than 1,350 kilos of cocaine by customs in January 2020 in the port in Antwerp Belgium.

From messages traced by the authorities, it was concluded that 32-year-old Promes was closely involved in the large-scale drug smuggling.

Promes, who has made 50 appearances for the Netherlands, himself was not present at the ruling of the court in Amsterdam today.

According to the Sparta Moscow winger’s lawyer, Promes stayed in Russia due to ‘labour law obligations’, where he currently lives and is not in custody.

Russia does not have an extradition treaty with the Netherlands.

Promes, who has played for FC Twente, Go Ahead Eagles and Ajax, was previously sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin.
