THE Federal Government has started paying professors’ withheld salaries through the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
This was confirmed today by several academic sources.
The chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, acknowledged the development on official records, stating that it is true. The money has begun to come in.
In October 2023, President Bola Tinubu Tinubu approved the release of four of the eight months’ ASUU-withheld worker salaries.
The salaries were withheld when the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari implemented a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ against some university-based unions that went on strike for eight months in 2022.
The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, recently announced that the government had increased university staff’s salary by 35%.
The minister also stated that the government has granted autonomy to institutions by removing them from the Integrated Payment and Payroll Information System.
He said that universities no longer require a waiver to recruit and fill vacancies.
Mamman stated that these resolutions were reached through informal meetings with unions based in tertiary institutions.
