THE House of representative committee on financial crimes have decided to issue an arrest order for the executives of Binance, a cryptocurrency company, for not showing up for an investigation.
The Committee’s head, Ginger Onwusibe, said yesterday that the arrest order is to force the executives to face the lawmakers and respond to accusations of sponsoring terrorism and committing financial crimes.
A legal representative of Binance came before the committee and gave a written statement, saying that the company’s board is afraid of coming to Nigeria for fear that they might be arrested again by the government.
But the legislators did not accept the legal representative’s explanation.
The Nigerian government arrested two Binance leaders last week and is asking for nearly 10 billion dollars from the cryptocurrency company for allegedly tampering with foreign exchange rates and causing the naira to lose value.
