KYLIAN Mbappe and Harry Kane were the stars of the night in the UEFA Champions League last night as Paris Saint-Germain eased past Umar Sadiq’s Real Sociedad and Bayern Munich overcame Lazio.
PSG defeated Real Sociedad 2-1 in Spain to advance to the quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate while Bayern Munich beat Lazio 3-0 in Germany for a 3-1 aggregate victory.
In San Sebastian, Spain, Mbappe, who is likely to be playing in LaLiga next season for Real Madrid, scored PSG’s two goals to take the French champions past their hosts.
He struck first in the 15th minute, finishing off Ousmane Dembele’s through ball from a tight angle.
Mbappe doubled PSG’s lead on the night 11 minutes into the second half as he broke free from halfway and gave Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro no chance.
Real Sociedad, who left Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Umar Sadiq on the bench as an unused substitute, piled on the pressure in a bid to cut the deficit and were rewarded when Mikel Merino netted a consolation goal in the 89th minute.
In Munich, Kane was the hero for Bayern as they shook off poor Bundesliga form to produce a fine Champions League performance.
The England striker struck twice and Thomas Muller added the other goal to propel the German giants to the quarter-finals.
Bayern had lost the first leg 1-0 in Rome three weeks ago and needed victory at home to overturn the deficit.
Kane opened the scoring in the 38th minute when he nodded home his fifth Champions League goal this season, and Muller handed Bayern the lead on aggregate with another header just before half-time.
The job was done for Bayern in the 66th minute when Kane pounced on the rebound off Leroy Sane’s shot in the 66th minute.
Kane has now scored 33 goals in 33 games in all competitions this season, while Mbappe has 34 in 34.
