ATALANTA head coach Gian Piero Gasperini is backing Ademola Lookman to become the side’s star player.

Gasperini is impressed by the Super Eagles of Nigeria forward since his move to Atalanta from RB Leipzig for around €10m in 2022, especially his goal-scoring.

Lookman had an impressive outing last night, hitting the base of the post after a brilliant run as Atalanta played a 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie in Portugal.

“We all see Lookman ‘s potential and speed, but we must admit that he once didn’t play so offensively,” Gasperini said during his post-match interview.

“He used to score six, seven goals a year, while now he is quick, good at dribbling, even strong with his head.”

Lookman has already scored eight goals in 21 Serie A appearances this season but Gasperini believes he can score even more and improve his all-round game.

“I encourage him because every now and then he hides from the game, but I believe that when he approaches the area he can become a reference player for our team,” the Italian added.

Lookman’s 23 goals and 11 assists in 60 games for Atalanta is his best return he has ever had for any club in his career, having played for Charlton Athletic, Everton, Leicester City, Fulham and RB Leipzig.
