THERE were victories for Nigeria in the women’s football and men’s football events of the African Games in Ghana tonight, with both the Falconets and Flying Eagles winning crucial matches.
The Falconets, Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, thrashed Senegal 4-0 in Cape Coast while the men’s U-20 Flying Eagles scraped past South Sudan 1-0 in Accra.
Loveth Edeh, Motunrayo Ezekiel and Chioma Olise struck for the Falconets in addition to an own goal as they eased into the women’s football event semi-finals.
The Falconets, who defeated Morocco 2-0 in their opening group match on Friday night, have won their three-team group.
The Nigerian girls will play the runners-up from Group A in the semi-finals next Monday.
Meanwhile, the Flying Eagles avoided early elimination by edging past South Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium tonight to get back on track.
Ladan Bosso’s side had lost their opening group match 2-1 to Uganda on Thursday night and needed to win tonight to remain in contention.
They will face Senegal on Friday in their final group fixture and a win would guarantee passage to the semi-finals.
