BARELY 24 hours after a dramatic plenary that resulted in the suspension of the Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, Senator Abdul Ningi, Southern Senators reactivated their forum, electing Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, who represents Lagos East, as the Chairman.
The inauguration of Abiru, who succeeds Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Vice Chairman Victor Umeh of Anambra, comes nine months after the commencement of the 10th Senate.
The 51 Senators from 17 southern states also elected six executives under Abiru’s leadership.
Recall that the southern forum has existed since the 9th Senate, similar to its northern counterpart. However, Bamidele couldn’t provide leadership due to his role as the Senate Majority Leader.
Following his appointment, Abiru, the newly appointed leader, has pledged that the forum will facilitate constructive discussions and analysis of national matters as well as collaborate with the Northern Senators Forum to contribute to the country’s progress.
