MANCHESTER City were held to a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium by a resilient Arsenal side today, giving Liverpool the advantage in the three-horse English Premier League title race.
Arsenal started the day on top of the table but dropped to second spot, as Liverpool took the top position after beating Brighton 2-1 at Anfield in the first Easter Sunday fixture.
Champions Manchester City are third, three points adrift of Liverpool and one behind Arsenal in one of the tightest title races in recent years.
It was Pep Guardiola’s City that dominated possession and looked to be more eager for the win, while Mikel Arteta successfully set his side up to hold off the champions.
It would be considered a good result by Arsenal, who had lost their previous seven Premier League matches at the Etihad Stadium to Manchester City.
City bossed most of the possession in the first half but it was impossible to break down Arsenal’s defence as Gabriel and man of the match William Saliba kept Erling Haaland redundant.
The second half was in a similar pattern, with Arsenal doing most of the defending, although the Gunners created some good chances and could have stolen all the points on the breakaway.
It is the first time since 2011 that a match between the two sides would end 0-0, and Arsenal are the first side to keep a clean sheet against City at the Etihad Stadium since October 2021.
Earlier, Liverpool came back from an early Danny Welbeck goal for Brighton to win 2-1, with Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah netting
