THE Delta State Police Command has rescued nine students kidnapped on the East-West Road in Ughelli, Delta State.

Reports revealed that the students were abducted yesterday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright, confirmed the rescue late yesterday on his X account saying: “All nine of the victims have regained their freedom pls.”

The students were said to be travelling in a minibus before the abduction.

The PPRO stated that the abductees “may have been students who were returning from their school in Calabar, Cross River State on Friday night.”

The bus driver was said to be unhurt, adding that the kidnappers hadn’t demanded ransom while the police operatives had swung into action.

“The command is aware of this ugly incident, and we are doing all it takes to ensure that they are rescued unhurt,” the state PPRO tweeted on his X handle earlier yesterday.

This comes less than a month after 137 pupils from the LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School were kidnapped in Kaduna State on March 7.

The kidnapping, which lasted many weeks, claimed the life of a teacher, Mallam Abubakar, who died due to difficulties while in captivity.

However, following their rescue, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani offered to provide free education to the youths, adding that they (the students) had received counselling and therapy from psychologists.
