Manchester United cancel player awards night over poor results

MANCHESTER United will not be holding their annual Player of the Year award night after a woeful campaign.

Reports in England today claimed that the club cancelled plans to host the end-of-season ceremony, which had been scheduled for next Monday.

The major reason given for the cancellation is that manager Erik ten Hag and the rest of the United hierarchy do not want any distractions ahead of the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25.

However, it is believed that the poor performances and results of the senior men’s team led to the decision to scrap the ceremony.

Ten Hag’s side are currently eighth in the English Premier League after losing nine home matches across all competitions, the most they have suffered in a single campaign in their history (also nine in 1920-21, 1930-31, 1933-34, 1962-63, and 1973-74).

They are also on course for their lowest ever finish in the Premier League era, having conceded a record 54 goals and lost 14 matches, which is another unwanted record.

Under Ten Hag’s guidance, Manchester United also finished bottom of a UEFA Champions League group that included FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, winning only one of six matches, losing four.

Citing club sources, the BBC reported that Manchester United award winners will be selected for the men’s and women’s team and the academy as normal but there will be no dinner, which the club said in the past raised ‘vital funds’ for United’s Foundation.

Despite the failures of United’s men’s team, on Sunday their women’s team won the FA Cup for the first time, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

United’s academy side finished top of Premier League North, winning 20 out of their 24 matches and play Chelsea for the national title tonight.
