THE Lagos State Police Command has released popular street singer Habeeb Okikiola, also known as Portable, after he spent the night in police custody.
Portable was arrested in the Abule Egba area of Lagos for allegedly failing to pay the balance on a G-Wagon vehicle he had purchased from a car dealer.
Although the vehicle was worth ₦27 million, he had only paid ₦13 million, leaving a ₦14 million balance.
In a viral video, Portable was seen scaling a gate as policemen approached him with an arrest warrant.
Another video showed him being dragged, handcuffed, and transported by four policemen into a waiting vehicle.
The car dealer, who identified herself in the background, recounted how Portable had threatened her when she demanded payment for the outstanding debt.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesman in the state, Portable was granted bail today after spending Tuesday night in custody.
Both Portable and the car dealer are expected to return for further proceedings.
“He (Portable) has been released; he was granted bail on Wednesday to come back with the complainant later,” Hundeyin said, adding that “the outcome of that meeting will determine our next line of action.”
This isn’t Portable’s first encounter with the police.
In April 2023, he was arrested in Ogun State and faced charges related to alleged assault and theft.
After being arraigned in the Ifo Magistrate Court, he was remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre but was later released upon meeting his bail conditions.
