NIGER: Several trapped as building collapses

SEVERAL individuals have been trapped after a one-story structure collapsed in Minna, Niger State’s capital.

Emergency personnel who raced to the scene today were successful in rescuing seven people who are being treated at Minna General Hospital.

The building is in the popular New Market Area of Minna, the North-Central State’s capital.

The manual evacuation of the debris has begun as of the time of reporting this story, and authorities have stated that machinery would be mobilized as soon as possible to rescue individuals suspected of being trapped.

The immediate cause of the building collapse is unknown at the time of this publication.

The Director of Information and Special Duties of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Hussaini Ibrahim, who was present at the scene, stated that the rescue operation is still ongoing.

Also, Bako Ismail, General Manager of the Niger State Urban Development agency, stated that the structure was illegally transformed to a story building and that the agency had made numerous attempts to prohibit the property owner from doing so.
