Tinubu appoints Nkiruka Maduekwe as NCCC DG

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has approved Nkiruka Maduekwe’s temporary appointment as Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), which is subject to confirmation by the NCCC supervisory council.

According to Ajuri Ngelale, the president’s Special Adviser on Media, Maduekwe, 39, has a bachelor’s degree in law, a master’s degree in environmental law and policy from the University of Dundee (UK), and a doctorate in law from the University of Hull.

She will co-chair the intergovernmental committee overseeing the national carbon market activation strategy.

Maduekwe has over 15 years of national and international expertise developing and implementing climate policies and projects.

The president has also appointed Ibrahim Shelleng, 40, as Senior Special Assistant to the President for Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement in the President’s Office. He is seconded to the NCCC Secretariat, where he will oversee all aspects of climate finance and stakeholder/donor relations.

Olamide Fagbuji, 44, has been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations, Office of the President. He has been seconded to the NCCC secretariat, where he will manage the digitalization of a new open procurement procedure and a cross-departmental procedural optimisation programme.

The nominations take effect immediately, per the president’s direction.

The president expects the new appointees to bring their knowledge and discipline to bear on these very important assignments in support of the nation’s goal of green industrial development and climate action for long-term economic and national success.
