GERMANY shook off a storm-induced delay tonight to beat Denmark 2-0 and advance to the quarter-finals of the Euro 2024 European Championship.

The match in Dortmund was temporarily halted in the first half due to a heavy storm that was deemed dangerous but hosts Germany kept their cool when play resumed.

Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala struck for the Germans as they buried the ghost of their round of 16 exit at Euro 2020.

Germany took the lead eight minutes into the second half, Havertz placing his penalty beyond the sizeable reaches of Kasper Schmeichel.

The spot kick was awarded to Germany after a VAR review confirmed that Joachim Andersen had handled the ball in the box.

Incidentally, Andersen had been involved five minutes earlier in another VAR intervention. The centre-back had scored what he thought was the game’s opening goal, but it was ruled out for the most marginal of offsides.

Germany wrapped up the contest in the 68th minute, Musiala outpacing Andersen before confidently slotting home past Schmeichel.

The goal was Musiala’s third of the tournament, making the Bayern Munich midfielder the joint-top scorer so far along with Georges Mikautadze of Georgia.

In the quarter-finals, Germany will face either Spain or Georgia on July 5 in Stuttgart.
