ANDY Murray has withdrawn from the men’s singles event at Wimbledon, the former champion confirmed today.
He however still on course to play in the doubles with his brother Jamie.
The British veteran, who is planning to retire later this year, had surgery 10 days ago on a back issue.
The 37-year-old Murray, who won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, was due to play Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic on Centre Court today.
Murray has been struggling with fitness and had to retire from his match against Australia’s Jordan Thompson at Queen’s on June 19 because of a back issue.
A few days later the former world No.1 had a cyst close to his spinal cord removed because it was causing nerve pain in his right leg.
Despite the surgery Murray still hopes to compete at the All-England Club one final time before bringing his illustrious career to a close.
Meanwhile, a number of star players advanced to the second round of Wimbledon yesterday.
Men’s world No.1 Jannik Sinner, who is the top seed at a Grand Slam for the first time in his young career, dropped a set but defeated Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to progress.
Women’s world No.2 Coco Gauff began her Wimbledon campaign in ruthless fashion, breezing past Caroline Dolehide 6-1, 6-2, while 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu beat Renata Zarazau 7-6, 6-3 win to reach the second round.
Paula Badosa also overpowered Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-2 to reach the 2nd round at Wimbledon.
