THE Confederation of African Football has expressed sadness at the untimely death of Egyptian player Ahmed Refaat, who has passed away at the age of 31.
Refaat, who was an Egypt international, died yesterday following a heart attack he had in March during an Egyptian Premier League, his club Modern Future announced.
Refaat was placed in an intensive care unit on March 11 after collapsing in the 88th minute of Modern Future’s league match against Al-Ittihad Alexandria.
The forward, who was fitted with a pacemaker, was discharged a month later and continued to receive treatment.
“Modern Future FC announces the death of Ahmed Refaat, first team and Egyptian national team player, as a result of a serious deterioration in his health,” the club said in a statement.
“He was transferred to the hospital to die after an uphill journey of struggle following the health crisis that occurred on March 11 2024.”
CAF sent condolences to the family of Refaat and the Egyptian Football Association today on the ‘sudden’ death of the young footballer.
“The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) is saddened by the news of the sudden passing of Egyptian player, Ahmed Refaat who played for Morden Future in the Egyptian Premier League,” the continental body said in an official statement.
“Refaat, 31, suffered cardiac arrest on Saturday, 06 July 2024.
“CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe conveys heartfelt condolences to the family of Ahmed Refaat, Egyptian Football Association (“EFA”) and the Egyptian Football family.
“May Ahmed Refaat’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
Refaat played seven times for the Egypt national team and scored two goals.
