THE Commissioner of Police for the Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has condemned the brutal attack and murder of four police officers and one civilian by gunmen believed to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN.
In response, he has deployed tactical units to track down those responsible for the assault.
The officers were ambushed and killed while on a routine patrol at Irete along the Owerri-Onitsha expressway, and a civilian was also caught in the crossfire and fatally wounded.
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, upon learning of the tragic incident, the Commissioner immediately mobilized to the scene to assess the situation firsthand.
He oversaw the evacuation of the deceased victims’ bodies, which were then taken to a mortuary for preservation.
An injured civilian was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and responding well.
“The Commissioner of Police expressed deep sorrow over this incident and pledged that the Command will spare no effort in ensuring that those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice,” the statement noted, emphasizing that the individuals behind this senseless attack have disrupted peace in the community.
“This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the daily risks and sacrifices police officers make in their steadfast commitment to public safety”.
CP Aboki Danjuma extended his condolences to the families of the deceased victims and offered prayers for the repose of their souls.
Additionally, the Commissioner urged members of the public, especially residents of Ogbakwu, to report any information that could aid the police in capturing the attackers. They can do so at the nearest police station or by calling the Command’s emergency numbers: 08034773600 or 08098880197.
