Today, the Abuja Division of the National Industrial Court ordered resident physicians under the auspices of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to suspend a nationwide industrial action and resume work immediately.

⁣On August 1, doctors laid down their tools and left hospitals and clinics due to poor working conditions, government disregard for agreements, and irregular pay.⁣

NARD was sued by the federal government, which asked for an interlocutory injunction to prevent the doctors from continuing with the strike.⁣

The court has now granted those prayers.⁣

Judge Targema just decided that “Having reviewed the affidavit describing the urgency of the case, the grounds of the application, the affidavit supporting the request and the arguments from the applicant’s counsel.⁣

In addition, I considered the submissions and arguments of counsel on the law as it stands in this case.⁣

“It is hereby ordered that claimant/applicant and the defendant/respondent suspend all forms of hostilities forthwith pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”⁣

Nigerian doctors have repeatedly gone on strike to protest poor health facilities and low wages.⁣

Muhammadu Buhari, elected in 2015 on a change mantra, has been attending to his health in London as doctors continue to demand improved working conditions.
