Electricity grid collapses for the second time in one month

Nigeria’s power grid has collapsed for the second time in less than a month, worsening the blackout experienced by millions of households and business owners.

The collapse occurred around 1:00 pm on Monday and was confirmed by two of the country’s electricity distribution companies.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria attributed the total collapse of the grid on July 28, 2021, to the loss of 611 megawatts at two power stations.

According to a message posted by Eko Electricity Distribution Company on its Facebook page, “We regret to inform you that a system collapse on the national grid is causing outages across our distribution network.”.

“We are working with our TCN partners to restore supply as soon as possible. Please bear with us.”

In a statement, Kaduna Electric said, “We sincerely apologize for the power outage in our franchise states that is due to a system failure from the national grid.”. As soon as the grid is back up, supply will be restored.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause all our customers.”

Due to a lack of spinning reserves, the grid operated by government-owned TCN has continued to suffer system failures over the years.

Spinner reserves are online but are unloaded generators, which can be activated within 10 minutes to compensate for generation or transmission outages.
