The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has met with representatives of the Association of African Traditional Religion, Nigeria and Overseas (AATREN), Lagos State Chapter, ahead of the annual “Day of Traditional Worship” Isese Day on August 20.

State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, and Special Adviser, Mr Solomon Bonu, addressed members of the Association who recently paid a visit to the Ministry.

During the Commissioner’s remarks, she informed the traditionalists that a law that will protect their interests is already before the State House of Assembly.

She said that “The Bill that will protect the interest of traditional worshippers is already being considered by the State House of Assembly and will soon become law.”

Akinbile-Yussuf noted the request from Association members for the declaration of August 20 as a national holiday for practitioners of traditional religions was justified and added that the Ministry would continue to support the stand taken by the Association.

Consequently, the Commissioner promised that the Ministry would make arrangements for a meeting with Governor Sanwo-Olu, during which association members would be able to present their requests directly.

She assured AATREN of the government’s unwavering support, assuring them that the Governor cares about the interests of everyone.

Mr. Solomon Bonu, the Special Adviser praised the determination of members of the association and thanked them for their patience over the years.

Isese day is set aside by the Association of African Traditional Religion, Nigeria and Overseas (AATREN) to celebrate “Day of Traditional Worship”.

The association has been trying to get the day recognised and declared as a public day since 2019.
