A release from the hosting organisation, Goethe Institut (otherwise known as German Gultural Centre) reads:

“Dance Perpendicular is a performance that aims to examine the moments of encounter between marginalised people and the structures that define their lives. Integrating poetry performance, costume design, set installation and intuitive movements, this piece reflects on the tension between private existence and public repression. It explores the points where violence and marginalisation intersect with the interior worlds of individuals.

“The work centres on an optimistic idea of equal exchange; one that imagines paths crossing at a perfect right angle, where the humanity and agency of every person in the interaction is affirmed. In reality, points of encounter often reveal unequal dynamics—a verticality of relationships that promotes abusive exchanges at interpersonal and systemic levels.

“The performance is situated in interior space, mediated by the movements of participants, hence it considers the dialectics between inner and outer worlds.

“Dance Perpendicular invites hope by reimagining encounters with oppressive structures as potential spaces for the transformation of a situation—from silence, into creative word and action.”
