FLYING EAGLES of Nigeria head coach Aliyu Zubairu has confidence in his team’s chances at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations despite being drawn in a tough group.

The seven-time African U-20 champions were yesterday drawn against South Africa and fellow former champions Egypt and Morocco in Group C of the tournament scheduled for Cote d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18.

In his reaction to the draw, Zubairu said: “It’s a very good draw. If a team truly aspires to reach the FIFA World Cup, there is no need to shy away from any opponent.

“Facing Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa at this stage presents a tremendous opportunity. I believe it’s a blessing.”

Zubairu, who led the Flying Eagles to win the WAFU B qualifying tournament last year, stressed the necessity of mental preparation as his team get ready for the tough challenge.

“We need to dispel the notion that this is a ‘group of death,’” he said.

“In African football, there are no small teams anymore. The key is to prepare very well. A lesser-known nation can surprise everyone if they come prepared.”

To prepare the team, the Nigeria Football Federation put the Flying Eagles in camp to resume training, with a 30-man squad.

The body has also organised a two-match tour of Cairo for the Flying Eagles to play Egypt at the end of this month, the games billed for February 25 and February 27.
