THE Nigerian Army has officially renamed the Ikeja Cantonment in honor of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Taoreed Lagbaja.

The renaming ceremony, held on February 28, 2025, in Lagos, was attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Chief of Army Staff Olufemi Oluyede, and other top military officials and dignitaries.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the renaming goes beyond a simple title change—it serves as a tribute to Lagbaja’s dedication and sacrifices for Nigeria.

“This renaming is a symbol of our respect, gratitude, and recognition for Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, whose life embodied courage, discipline, and patriotism,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu also commended the Nigerian Army and the Ministry of Defence for their efforts in honoring the late military leader, reinforcing the importance of acknowledging the contributions of national heroes.

The Chief of Army Staff Olufemi Oluyede paid tribute to his predecessor, highlighting Lagbaja’s contributions to infrastructure development during his tenure as Commander of the 9 Brigade.

According to Oluyede, renaming the cantonment was a fitting way to immortalize Lagbaja’s legacy.

Lagbaja served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until his passing on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56 due to an illness.

Appointed by President Bola Tinubu, he succeeded Lieutenant-General Faruk Yahaya.

His 17-month tenure was marked by professionalism, dedication, and significant contributions to counterinsurgency, internal security, and peacekeeping operations.
