THE Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has charged Nigerian Army troops to intensify their efforts in making the country safer and more secure for all Nigerians.
Oluyede gave the directive yesterday during his maiden operational visit to the 12 Brigade, Charimaigumeri Barracks, Lokoja, where he addressed soldiers at the parade ground.
Commending the troops for their dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty, the COAS stressed the need for greater commitment, especially in tackling security challenges in the Northwest, Northeast, North Central, and other regions.
“Every Nigerian is looking up to us to make the country safer. This requires more commitment, a greater sense of duty, responsibility, and courage,” he said.
Oluyede reaffirmed his commitment to soldiers’ welfare, acknowledging their sacrifices and dedication. He announced key welfare initiatives, including:
1. Doubling of ration cash allowance (RCA) and instructors’ allowance
2. Affordable housing schemes to help soldiers own homes after retirement
3. Regular provision of uniforms, kits, and combat enablers
4. Improved office and residential accommodations
5. Access to soft loan schemes for financially challenged troops
He urged soldiers to take advantage of the housing and loan schemes to secure their future.
“I will do my utmost to improve your welfare so we can have a better Army and a better life for your families. Security is key to national development, and we all have a responsibility to make Nigeria safer,” he stated.
The COAS also cautioned troops against extravagant lifestyles, advising them to live within their earnings.
During the visit, the Commander of 12 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Kasim Sidi, led Oluyede and his entourage on an inspection tour of completed and ongoing projects within the barracks.
The COAS also inaugurated key projects, including:
An electrically powered borehole with a 6,000-litre capacity, Foundation-laying for three blocks of two-bedroom semi-detached senior non-commissioned officers’ quarters and Inspection of the upgraded 12 Brigade Medical Centre.
Oluyede was accompanied by Maj.-Gen. Obinna Onubogu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, and other senior Army officers.
