IGP warns officers against illegal detention, vows consequences

THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has warned officers against illegal and prolonged detentions, emphasizing that violators will face serious consequences.

The IGP, in a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer and dated March 23, 2025, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to respecting human rights, citing sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee the right to dignity and personal liberty.

He cautioned against practices that could undermine public trust, stating that any officer found engaging in unlawful detentions would be held accountable.

The IGP also called for a culture of accountability within the Force, urging officers to uphold high ethical standards in their interactions with the public.

“By prioritizing human rights, the Nigeria Police Force aims to build stronger relationships with the communities it serves, ensuring that policing is conducted with integrity and respect,” the statement read.

The statement further emphasized that police officers must adhere to legally stipulated detention periods, adding that the Force leadership remains dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals.

The official police statement, reiterated that the current administration is focused on maintaining law and order while ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions.
