THE House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the Governors of Benue and Zamfara States—Hyacinth Alia and Dauda Lawal—as well as members of their respective state assemblies to appear before it on Thursday, March 8.
The summons requests that both the executive and legislative branches of the two states appear before the committee to justify why the House of Representatives should not assume their constitutional duties.
This directive was announced in a statement issued today by Chooks Oko, Head of Media for the committee.
According to Oko, the move follows a petition from the civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, calling on the House to take over the functions of the two state assemblies.
The summons, signed by Committee Chairman Mike Etaba, stated that the concerned parties are already familiar with the case details.
“Our responsibility is to uphold the rule of law at all times,” Etaba stated. “This hearing provides a clear platform for the parties to present their positions so Nigerians can understand the situation. Anarchy will not be allowed to thrive in our political system,” he added.
