THE Lagos State Government has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area.

In a statement released on Thursday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) announced that it is working in close coordination with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure justice is served in the case, which has triggered widespread public concern.

“We are deeply troubled by this incident involving the abuse of a 12-year-old girl in Iyana Ipaja, which has rightly drawn significant attention,” the agency stated.

The unidentified suspect is currently being held at the Ayobo Police Station. Authorities have transferred the case to the Gender Desk Unit for a thorough investigation.

“The DSVA is actively engaged in the matter, collaborating with law enforcement. The suspect is in police custody, and a formal investigation is ongoing,” the agency confirmed.

In addition to pursuing legal action, the Lagos State Government is also offering full support to the survivor and her family. This includes medical treatment and psychological care.

“The girl has been referred to the Ipaja Family Support Unit and Psychosocial Services to receive urgent and holistic support,” the DSVA noted.

The agency also acknowledged and appreciated the public for sounding the alarm, stressing the importance of community involvement in addressing and preventing sexual violence.

“We are grateful for the public’s vigilance. Collective awareness is essential in protecting our children from such horrific acts.”

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy on sexual violence, the Lagos State Government pledged to hold offenders fully accountable and ensure survivors receive justice.

“Our commitment to protecting children and prosecuting offenders remains unwavering,” the statement concluded.
