NIGERIAN sprinter Favour Ofili has made history by setting a new world record in the women’s 150 metres athletics event.
Ofili achieved the feat today at the Adidas Atlanta City Games in the United States of America, clocking a time of 15.85 seconds.
The 22-year-old has thus become the first woman in history to run the event under 16 seconds, smashing the previous world record of 16.23s set by Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018.
The 150m is a distance that is rarely run at major competitions like the Olympics, Commonwealth Games or African Games, but it is still a huge achievement for Ofili to hold its world record.
The only other Nigerian with a world record in athletics is Tobi Amusan, who shocked the globe with a stunning 12.12s in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in 2022.
Ofili, a Louisiana State University student, is a 100m and 200m specialist and represented Nigeria at the last Olympics in Paris.
She was involved in a controversy at the Games when her name was not entered for the 100m event although she had qualified to compete in the event.
Ofili however ran in the 200m, where she reached the final and finished sixth.
