THE sports ministry and the Nigeria Football Federation are scheduled to meet on Thursday to review the performance of the Super Eagles at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

The three-time African champions were knocked out by Tunisia in the round of 16 on Sunday, losing 1-0 to the North Africans.

The defeat was seen as an upset as the Super Eagles had won all their three group games while Tunisia won only one of theirs, and qualified for the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams, with just three points.

Thursday’s meeting, called at the instance of the sports minister Sunday Dare, is expected to discuss further the country’s preparations for the World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles face bitter rivals Ghana’s Black Stars in the World Cup final qualifying round playoffs in March.

There are also indications that Thursday’s meeting could discuss who will lead the Super Eagles technical crew during the World Cup playoffs.

Austin Eguavoen was drafted in as the interim head coach for the AFCON after the sacking of Gernot Rohr, and Jose Peseiro announced by the NFF as the permanent successor to the German.

However, the appointment of Peseiro is no longer certain as there have been calls for Eguavoen, who is the NFF’s technical director, to continue as Super Eagles head coach at least for the playoffs.
